On the central northern border of OK, northeast of Enid; original county; organized as 'K' County 1895 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the letter K. The first seven counties of OK were originally numbered. The next fifteen were lettered (A-Q, except I and J). All later received names except 'K' County, which became Kay.

Area (sq mi): 945.12 (land 918.70; water 26.42). Pop per sq mi: 50.60.
Pop 2005: 46,480. State rank: 17. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.30%; 1990-2000 0.00%. Pop 2000: 48,080 (White 82.50%; Black or African American 1.80%; Hispanic or Latino 4.30%; Asian 0.50%; Other 13.50%). Foreign born: 2.30%. Median age: 38.10.
Income 2000: per capita $16,643; median household $30,762; Pop below poverty level: 16.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,844-$25,126.
Unemployment 2004: 6.00%. Change from 2000: 1.00%. Median travel time to work: 16.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 8.30%.
