Kazakov, Aleksandr Vasil’evich

Born Nov. 10 (22), 1888, in Borisoglebsk; died Sept. 10, 1950, in Moscow. Soviet lithologist and geochemist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1938).

In 1919, Kazakov was one of the directors of the first scientific center for the study of agronomical ores (now called the Scientific Research Institute of Fertilizers, Insecticides, and Fungicides). In 1925 he became deputy chairman of the Committee on Fertilizers. During the Great Patriotic War he organized the State Institute of Mining and Chemical Raw Materials. In 1944 he became head of the laboratory for the synthesis of minerals formed from sedimentary rocks at the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Kazakov participated in working out systems of equilibrium at low concentrations and the synthesis of minerals of sedimentary origin. His research established the physicochemical conditions for the formation of a number of sedimentary minerals, including hydroxylapatite, fluorapatite, fluorite, and siderite. He proposed a theory of the formation of phosphorites (such as chemical precipitates of seas of normal salinity), which brought him world renown. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
