Kazanets, Ivan Pavlovich 

Born Oct. 12, 1918, in the village of Lotsmanskaia Kamenka, now within the city limits of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR. Soviet statesman. Member of the CPSU since 1944.

The son of a peasant, Kazanets graduated from the Dneprope-trovsk Industrial Technicum in 1937. In 1944 he graduated fromthe evening division of the Siberian Metallurgical Institute. Be-tween 1937 and 1944 he worked at the Kuznetsk MetallurgicalCombine as an electrician, foreman, and section chief. Between1944 and 1952 he worked at the Enakievo Metallurgical Plant, where he held positions as the chief of a shift, the chief of thetraining center, the assistant secretary of the party committee of the plant, a shop superintendent, and a party organizer for the Central Committee of the CPSU. In 1952–53, Kazanets was thefirst secretary of the Enakievo and then of the Makeevka city committees of the Ukrainian Communist Party (UCP), DonetskOblast. From 1953 to 1960 he was the first secretary of the Donetsk oblast committee of the UCP; and from 1960 to 1963, second secretary of the Central Committee of the UCP. From1963 to 1965, Kazanets was the chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. Since October 1965 he has beenthe minister of the ferrous metal industry of the USSR. At theTwentieth Party Congress in 1956, Kazanets was elected a can-didate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He waselected a full member of the Central Committee of the CPSU atthe 22nd, 23rd, and 24th party Congresses, and he was a deputy to the fourth through ninth convocations of the Supreme Sovietof the USSR. He has been awarded five Orders of Lenin and anumber of medals.
