Kazanskii, Vladimir Borisovich
Born June 28, 1931, in Moscow. Soviet physical chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1962. Son of B. A. Kazanskii. V. B. Kazanskii graduated from Moscow State University in 1954, and from 1957 to 1967 he was on the staff of the Institute of Chemical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1967 he became the assistant director of the N. D. Zelinskii Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; beginning in 1969 he served concurrently as head of a laboratory. Kazanskii’s principal works are devoted to the reactive centers on the surfaces of oxide catalysts and to the role of adsorbed free radicals in catalytic oxidation and in radiation-catalyzed processes. He has also done quantum-chemical calculations pertaining to the mechanisms of catalytic reactions. Kazanskii has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and a medal.
