Keane, John

Keane, John (Joseph) (1839–1918) Catholic prelate; born in County Donegal, Ireland. Emigrating with his parents (1846), he settled in Baltimore, studied for the priesthood, and after ordination did parish work. In 1878 he became bishop of Richmond. Regarded as a liberal, he earned a national reputation as a cofounder and first rector (1889–97) of Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He held Vatican posts in Rome (1897–99), and after fund-raising for the University, served as archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa (1900–11).
