Kecskemét (kĕch`kĕmāt), city (1991 est. pop. 103,600), central Hungary, in a fruit-growing region. It is a county administrative center, a road and rail hub, and a manufacturing city whose industries produce food products, textiles, and agricultural machinery. Known since the 4th cent., the city has several churches, a museum, and a law school with a large library. The Hungarian dramatist Joseph Katona was born in Kecskemét.
Kecskemét a city in Hungary; located between the Danube and Tisza rivers; administrative center of Bács-Kiskun megye (county). Population, 77,000 (1970). It is the center of an important viticulture, fruit-growing, and vegetable-growing region, providing products for export. It has food industry, including a fruit and vegetable cannery, a flour mill, a distillery, and a poultry farm as well as wine-making enterprises. Other industries include the manufacture of metal products for communal services and the production of tape recorders and footwear. There is an agricultural research institute in Kecskemét.
