Kedrov, Filipp Grigor’evich 

Born July 12 (25), 1909, in the village of Alnashi, in what is now the Udmurt ASSR; died Feb. 13, 1944, in the village of Bondino-Mosino, Byelorussian SSR. Soviet Udmurt writer. Son of a poor peasant.

Kedrov graduated from pedagogical school in 1928 and studied at the Udmurt Pedagogical Institute from 1938 to 1940. He fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 and was killed at the front. Kedrov’s poetry was first published in 1928. His novella Katia (1940; Russian translation, 1957) dealt with the life of the Udmurt village before the revolution and depicted the Udmurt woman rising in opposition to the oppressors of the people. The novella became the basis for the first Udmurt opera, Natal’ (music by G. A. Korepanov). Kedrov was awarded three orders as well as medals.
