Kekulé von Stradonitz, Friedrich August (frē`drĭkh ou`g
st kā`k lā fən shträ`dōnĭts), 1829–96, German organic chemist. He was professor at Ghent (1858–65) and at Bonn from 1865. He made studies of various carbon compounds, especially benzene benzene , colorless, flammable, toxic liquid with a pleasant aromatic odor. It boils at 80.1°C; and solidifies at 5.5°C;.
