Kelantan (kəlăn`tən, kəlän'tän`), state (1991 pop. 1,207,684), 5,780 sq mi (14,970 sq km), central Malay Peninsula, Malaysia, on the South China Sea. It is bordered on the N by Thailand. Rice, the most important commercial crop, is grown on the wide coastal plains; other products are rubber and copra. Tin, gold, manganese, and iron are mined on a small scale in the hills of the interior. The people are mainly Malay, but there is a small Chinese minority. Kelantan was ruled by Sri Vijaya until the 13th cent.; it fell under the sway of Malacca (see Melaka Melaka or Malacca (1991 pop. 112,873). Until the 17th cent., Malacca was one of the leading commercial centers of SE Asia. It was founded c.1400 by a Malay prince who had been driven from Singapore after a brief reign there. ..... After the fall of Malacca (1511), conflict among many powers resulted eventually in the establishment by Siam of sovereignty over the area (early 19th cent.). Kelantan became a protectorate of Great Britain in 1909. Before the establishment of the Federation of Malaya (1948), Kelantan was classed as one of the Unfederated Malay States. It is found in several countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Iran and Thailand but is most popular in Malaysia and Indonesia, in Malaysia, the states of Kelantan and Terengganu are well known for its batik. Together with the provocative headline "Orang ramai marah Razaleigh pakai tengkolok bersalib" ("The general public is furious over Razaleigh wearing a headgear with a cross"), the photograph and the article alongside it implied that Razaleigh, a relative of the Sultan of Kelantan, was not truly committed to Islam or the Malay race. It swept back to power in the northeastern state of Terengganu, and came close to wresting control of its Kelantan stronghold from its Islamist Party (PAS) rival. |
