Keller, James (Gregory) (1900–77) religious leader; born in Oakland, Calif. A Catholic priest, he was the founder (1945) and director (through 1969) of the Christophers, a nondenominational movement urging individual action to improve the world, under the motto "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."
