Kellermann, François Étienne Christophe

    0.02 sec.
Kellermann, François Étienne Christophe

Born May 28, 1735, in Strasbourg; died Sept. 23, 1820, in Paris. French marshal (1804), duke of Valmy (1808).

Kellermann participated in the Seven Years’ War (1756–63) and the wars of the French Revolution. In 1791, as commander of troops in Alsace, he repulsed the interventionist invasion. In 1792, having united with the army of C. Dumouriez, he played a decisive role in the defeat of the Austro-Prussian troops at Valmy. From 1793 to 1797 (with an interruption), he commanded the Army of the Alps. Under Napoleon I he was commander of the reserve forces in France. In 1814 he went over to the side of the Bourbons and was a member of the Chamber of Peers.
