In south-central AK, bounded on west by Cook Inlet, on east by the Gulf of Alaska, inlets of the Pacific. Established by combining the former divisions of Kenai-Cook Inlet and Seward. Name Origin: For a local Indian tribe; meaning of name unknown.

Area (sq mi): 24754.60 (land 16013.26; water 8741.34). Pop per sq mi: 3.20.
Pop 2005: 51,960. State rank: 4. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.60%; 1990-2000 21.80%. Pop 2000: 49,691 (White 85.10%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 1.00%; Other 12.40%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $20,949; median household $46,397; Pop below poverty level: 10.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,156-$29,362.
