Kenedy County, Texas PO Box 227 Sarita, TX 78385 Phone: (361) 294-5220 Fax: (361) 294-5218 On the southeastern coast of TX, south of Corpus Christi; organized as Willacy County 1911 from Hidalgo and Cameron counties; name changed Apr 2, 1921, at which time a new Willacy County was created from Cameron and Hidalgo counties plus a 1.4 mile strip of Old Willacy. Name Origin: For Capt. Mifflin Kenedy (1818-95), commercial navigator of the Rio Grande, half-owner of the King ranch (1860-68), and part-owner of the TX narrow gauge railroad (1876-81). Area (sq mi): 1945.60 (land 1456.77; water 488.83). Pop per sq mi: 0.30. Pop 2005: 417. State rank: 252. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.70%; 1990-2000 -10.00%. Pop 2000: 414 (White 20.30%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 79.00%; Asian 0.50%; Other 34.30%). Foreign born: 13.30%. Median age: 34.20.
