On the southeastern coast of TX, south of Corpus Christi; organized as Willacy County 1911 from Hidalgo and Cameron counties; name changed Apr 2, 1921, at which time a new Willacy County was created from Cameron and Hidalgo counties plus a 1.4 mile strip of Old Willacy. Name Origin: For Capt. Mifflin Kenedy (1818-95), commercial navigator of the Rio Grande, half-owner of the King ranch (1860-68), and part-owner of the TX narrow gauge railroad (1876-81).
