In south-central ME, southwest of Bangor; organized Feb 20, 1799 (prior to statehood) from Lincoln County. Name Origin: For part of the Kennebec River; from an Abnaki Indian word probably meaning 'long, quiet water.'

Area (sq mi): 951.18 (land 867.58; water 83.60). Pop per sq mi: 139.50.
Pop 2005: 120,986. State rank: 4. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.30%; 1990-2000 1.00%. Pop 2000: 117,114 (White 97.00%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 0.70%; Asian 0.60%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 38.70.
Income 2000: per capita $18,520; median household $36,498; Pop below poverty level: 11.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,430-$28,421.
Unemployment 2004: 4.80%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 22.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 19.60%.
