Established: Authorized as a national battlefield site on February 8, 1917; changed to a national battlefield park on June 26, 1935. Location: In Kennesaw, Georgia, just west of Marietta. Accessible via I-75 and the Barrett Pkwy. Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities: Hiking, horseback riding, interpretive programs, auto touring. Special Features: Eleven miles of Union and Confederate earthworks are preserved within the park, marking the site of the battles of Kolb's Farm (June 22, 1864) and Kennesaw Mountain (June 27, 1864) during the Atlanta Campaign. General William T. Sherman's southward advance was temporarily halted here by General Joseph T. Johnston and the stalwart defense of his Confederates. Park interprets the historic events in which more than 5,350 soldiers were killed in the battles fought here from June 19, 1864 through July 2, 1864. See other parks in Georgia.
