On southeastern border of WI; organized Jan 30, 1850 from Racine County. Name Origin: For the name of Potawatomi (Algonquian) Indian villages, meaning 'pike' or 'pickerel,' for the abundance of this fish in the local creeks.

Area (sq mi): 754.31 (land 272.83; water 481.48). Pop per sq mi: 588.40.
Pop 2005: 160,544. State rank: 7. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.30%; 1990-2000 16.70%. Pop 2000: 149,577 (White 85.10%; Black or African American 5.10%; Hispanic or Latino 7.20%; Asian 0.90%; Other 5.60%). Foreign born: 4.80%. Median age: 34.80.
Income 2000: per capita $21,207; median household $46,970; Pop below poverty level: 7.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,726-$29,117.
Unemployment 2004: 5.80%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 25.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 43.80%.
