Kenyon, William Squire

Kenyon, William Squire, 1869–1933, U.S. Senator (1911–22) from Iowa, b. Elyria, Ohio. He practiced law at Fort Dodge, Iowa, was county prosecutor, and became a state district court judge before serving (1910–11) as assistant to the U.S. Attorney General. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1911 and served there until 1922. Kenyon immediately joined the Republican insurgents, was the co-author of the Webb-Kenyon Act (1913) prohibiting the shipment of intoxicating beverages in interstate commerce, and was the first leader of the Senate farm bloc. Kenyon later served (1922–33) as judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and was (1929–30) a member of the Wickersham Commission (see Wickersham, George Woodward Wickersham, George Woodward, 1858–1936, American lawyer and government official, b. Kenyon, William Squire (1869–1933) U.S. senator, judge; born in Elyria, Ohio. A lawyer, he served in the U.S. Senate (Rep., Ohio; 1911–22), where as a progressive he supported labor and the "farm bloc." Appointed a U.S. circuit judge (1922–23), he canceled the leases that Secretary of Interior Albert Fall had granted in what was known as the Teapot Dome scandal.
