Kerbedz, Stanislav Valerianovich

    0.01 sec.
Kerbedz, Stanislav Valerianovich

Born 1810 in the province of Kovno; died Apr. 7 (19), 1899, in Warsaw. Russian bridge engineer. Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1858).

Kerbedz graduated from the Institute of the Corps of Railroad Engineers in St. Petersburg in 1831. He designed and built a cast-iron arch bridge over the Neva River in St. Petersburg from 1842 to 1850. It was the first permanent bridge over the Neva; it is now known as the Lieutenant Shmidt Bridge. Kerbedz’ designs were also used for the construction of a metal railroad bridge over the Luga River (1853–57) and a bridge over the Vistula River (Warsaw, 1858–66). In 1859 he conducted the first investigation of the relative strength of riveted joints with drilled and punched holes. Kerbedz played a significant role in the development of designs for metal bridges.
