Kern, John W. (Worth) (1849–1917) U.S. senator; born in Alto, Ind. Active in state politics, and an unsuccessful Democratic vice-presidential candidate in 1908, he was elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Ind.; 1911–17). As Senate majority leader he supported progressive initiatives such as child labor legislation.
