In north-central SC, northeast of Columbia; organized 1798 from old Craven County. Name Origin: For Col. Joseph Kershaw, SC army officer during the Revolutionary War and SC legislator.

Area (sq mi): 740.25 (land 726.26; water 14.00). Pop per sq mi: 77.80.
Pop 2005: 56,486. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.30%; 1990-2000 20.80%. Pop 2000: 52,647 (White 70.70%; Black or African American 26.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.70%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 37.40.
