Kette, Dragotin

Born Jan. 19, 1876, in the village of Prem; died Apr. 26, 1899, in Ljubljana. Slovene poet.

Kette, the son of a teacher, was one of the founders of Slovene Modern, a literary group that expressed the artistic strivings and rebellious moods of youth. His poems, which are closely related to Slovene folk songs, are marked by a joy of life and a bright humor. His last works contain tragic motifs. Kette translated the works of several poets, including A. S. Pushkin, I. A. Krylov, and A. V. Kol’tsov into Slovene. He died of tuberculosis.
