Keweenaw (kē`wĭnô), peninsula, 60 mi (97 km) long, projecting NE from the W Upper Peninsula, NW Mich., into Lake Superior. Portage Lake and a connecting ship canal cut across the middle of the peninsula, converting its upper portion into an island and creating an important waterway. The canal is crossed by a bridge with one of the world's heaviest lift spans. The local area is popular with vacationers.

The supplemental deer feeding area is all portions of Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, Alger, and Luce counties, and those portions of Marquette and Chippewa counties north of the T43N-T44N boundary line.
To depict the life of the Copper Mining, Keweenaw National Historic Path was established in 1992.
Lighthouses are plentiful on the UR and the Keweenaw Peninsula, which protrudes into Lake Superior at the NW corner of the UP, is now home to deserted copper mines and the remnants of the unique culture that surrounded this 19th century industry.
