Capernaum or Capharnaum (kəpûr`nēəm; kəfär`nēəm), town, NE ancient Palestine, on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee; in the Gospels, it is closely associated with Jesus' ministry, and was the home of several of Jesus' disciples. A synagogue of the 3d cent. has been excavated on the site (Kefar Nahum) and partially restored. The area underneath this structure has revealed the remains of the synagogue whose construction the Gospel of St. Luke attributes to a Roman centurion.

Capernaum

Ancient city of Palestine. Located on the northwestern shore of Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee), it was the home of Jesus for much of his ministry. His disciples Peter, Andrew, and Matthew were from Capernaum, and he was said to have performed many of his miracles there. Excavations begun in 1905 indicated that the site of the ancient city is likely near modern Kefer Nahum, Israel. Among the remains discovered was a synagogue dating from the 2nd–3rd century AD.
