Khabibulla Amirkhanov

Amirkhanov, Khabibulla Ibragimovich 

Born Apr. 15 (28), 1907, in the village of Karadakh, in what is now the Dagestan ASSR. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Chairman of the presidium of the Dagestan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1950). Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1949). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Amirkhanov graduated from the University of Azerbaijan in 1930 and was named a professor there in 1946. He has been a member of the staff of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR since 1932, serving as the institute’s director from 1944 to 1950.

Amirkhanov’s principal works have dealt with solid-state physics. He proposed a method for measuring heat capacity at superhigh temperatures and pressures as well as a method for determining the absolute age of minerals.

Amirkhanov was a deputy to the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, four other orders, and various medals.
