Khata

among the Ukrainians, Byelorussians, and some Russians (in the southern regions), a dwelling consisting of a room with a stove or a larger structure with passageways and areas for livestock. The khata is usually made of logs, thatch, or clay. Most often it is coated with clay inside and out and whitewashed. The roof is four-sided and made of straw or rushes; sometimes the roof is made of planks that form only two sloping sides (among Byelorussians).
