Khaikin, Semen Emmanuilovich

Born Aug. 8 (21), 1901, in Minsk; died July 30, 1968, in Leningrad. Soviet physicist. Doctor of physicomathematical sciences (from 1935). Member of the CPSU from 1942.

Khaikin graduated from Moscow State University in 1928 and worked there from 1930 to 1946, becoming a professor in 1935. From 1945 to 1954 he headed the laboratory of oscillations of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Beginning in 1954, he headed the radio astronomical section of the Central Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Pulkovo. Khaikin made major contributions to the development of the theory of oscillations and theoretical radio engineering. The founder of Soviet experimental radio astronomy, he discovered, in 1947, radio radiation in the solar corona. He invented a new type of radio telescope—the variable-profile antenna. Khaikin also investigated the nature of dry friction.
