Khairpur

Khairpur (khīr`pr), city (1981 pop. 61,447), SE Pakistan, in Sind prov. It trades in wheat, cotton, tobacco, and dates and is linked by road and rail to Karachi. Manufactures include textiles, carpets, refined sugar, and leather goods. The city was the capital of the former princely state of Khairpur, which was founded in 1783 and merged into Pakistan in 1955. It is a cultural center with fine historic buildings, notably the Faiz Palace, and with several colleges affiliated with Sind Univ.
Khairpur 

a city in Pakistan, in Sind Province. Population, 34,000 (1961). Khairpur is a transportation junction and a landing on a canal near the Indus River. Industry includes the manufacture of matches and textiles (cotton and woven silk). Hand crafted goods produced in the city include fabrics, rugs, jewelry, and hardware.

The Minister said that a centre will also be constructed in Khairpur Tamewali on 48 kanal land for which funds of Rs 43 million have been released.
Allamma Ali Sher Haideri was killed along with one of his associates in the shooting at Pir Jo Goth village, Khairpur district, in southern Sindh province, senior police official Pir Muhammed Shah told AFP.
Ali Sher Haideri, chief of the Millat-e-Islamia Pakistan, was returning home in Khairpur, 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the southern city of Karachi, after a public gathering when gunmen ambushed his car, police said.
