Khanchev, Veselin Simeonov

Born Apr. 4, 1919, in Stara Zagora; died Nov. 3, 1966, in Sofia. Bulgarian poet. Honored Cultural Worker of Bulgaria (1963). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party from 1944.

Khanchev graduated from the faculty of law of the University of Sofia in 1943. His first collection of verse, Spain on the Cross, was published in 1937. His Selected Poems (1948) and Poems in Cartridge Clips (1954) are noted for their true-to-life presentation of experience. In the collection Lyrics (1960), the speaker’s confession is dramatically tense yet optimistic. Khanchev’s poems are usually in free verse and tend toward a conversational style. He also wrote literary criticism, dramas, screenplays, and poems for children. Khanchev received the Dimitrov Prize in 1959 and 1962.
