Kharagpur (käräg`pər), city (1991 pop. 264,842), West Bengal state, E central India. It is a railway and industrial center and has an important school of science and technology. Manufactures include shoes, textiles, and chemicals; there are railway workshops.

The city’s principal industries include metal processing (including railroad shops), general machine construction, and the rice-hulling and shoe industries.
