Kharagpur

Kharagpur (käräg`pər), city (1991 pop. 264,842), West Bengal state, E central India. It is a railway and industrial center and has an important school of science and technology. Manufactures include shoes, textiles, and chemicals; there are railway workshops.

a city in northeastern India, in the state of West Bengal. Population, 161,900 (1971). Kharagpur is an important transportation junction. The city’s principal industries include metal processing (including railroad shops), general machine construction, and the rice-hulling and shoe industries. There is a railway transportation institute.
