Kheraskov, Nikolai Pavlovich 

Born Oct. 2 (15), 1906, in Vladimir; died Sept. 11, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1965).

Kheraskov graduated from Moscow University in 1930. He worked at the Scientific Research Institute of Fertilizers from 1930 to 1934 and at the All-Union Institute of Mineral Raw Materials from 1934 to 1941. From 1941 to 1945 he worked for the Bashkir Geological Administration. Beginning in 1945, he was a senior research worker at the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works dealt with tectonics and with regularities in the formation of useful minerals. Kheraskov was one of the founders of the theory of geological formations.

Kheraskov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1969 for his participation in compiling the 1:5,000,000 tectonic map of Eurasia and in writing the monograph Tectonics of Eurasia. He was also awarded the A. P. Karpinskii Prize, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and various medals.
