Kholmsk 

a city under oblast jurisdiction and the administrative center of Kholmsk Raion, Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the west coast of southern Sakhalin, on Nevel’skoi Gulf. Port on the Sea of Japan, on the Tatar Strait. Population, 43,000 (1974). A seagoing railroad ferry operates between Vanino and Kholmsk, which has a railroad station. Kholmsk is a center for ocean fishing and has ship-repair facilities. Industry includes a pulp and paper combine, a canning combine, a meat-packing plant, a brewery, and a building-materials plant. The city has a marine navigation school and a people’s amateur theater.
