Khrenovskoi Bor

a forest on the left bank of the Bitiug River, Voronezh Oblast, RSFSR. Area, 40,800 hectares (ha). Wooded areas occupy 34,200 ha. The species composition is 61 percent pine, 15 percent oak, 12 percent black alder, 6 percent aspen, and 4 percent birch. The remaining 2 percent is made up of ash, maple, elm, linden, willow, and other species. Artificially reforested areas, some of which date to the mid-19th century, occupy 16,440 ha.

Khrenovskoi Bor is a large forest “island” on the boundary of the forest-steppe and steppe zones. It plays a very important role in water and soil conservation. Since 1888 the forest has been used as a training grounds for specialists in forest management; currently it is used by the Khrenovskoi Forest Technicum. The forest has been the subject of many studies in forest management. Experiments with artificial reforestation, particularly in conditions of inadequate moisture, have been especially valuable.
