Khrushchev, Konstantin Dmitrievich

Born 1852 in Weimar; died Apr. 19, 1912, in St. Petersburg. Russian experimental petrologist.

Khrushchev graduated from the University of Würzburg in 1872. He worked in Leipzig, Heidelberg, and Breslau. In 1899 he became a professor in the department of mineralogy at the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg.

Khrushchev studied the petrology of labradorites in Volynia and of diorites on Valaam Island, at Lake Ladoga, and in other regions. Using a high-temperature furnace that he designed, Khrushchev became the first to synthesize such minerals as mica, hornblende, cristobalite, and orthoclase.
