Planel’es, Khuan Khuanovich 

Born Apr 8, 1900, in Jerez, Spain; died Aug. 25, 1972, in Moscow. Microbiologist and pharmacologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1969; corresponding member, 1953) and corresponding member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain. A Spaniard by nationality.

Planel’es graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Madrid in 1921. From 1926 to 1936 he was scientific director of a Spanish pharmaceutical company, and, beginning in 1930, he directed the Institute of Clinical Research in Madrid. From 1936 to 1939 he headed the medical corps of the central republican army, becoming state secretary of public health of the Spanish Republic. In 1939, Planel’es moved to the USSR. From 1943 he worked at the N. F. Gamaleia Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. His principal works were on the biological standardization of pharmaceuticals and biological preparations, on sulfanilamides, and on resistance of microbes to drugs. Planel’es was awarded two orders and several medals.
