Kibrik, Evgenii Adol’fovich 

Born Feb. 8 (21), 1906, in Voznesensk, in present-day Nikolaev Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Soviet graphic artist and painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1967); member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1962).

Kibrik studied under P. G. Volokidin and T. B. Fraerman at the Institute of Fine Arts in Odessa from 1922 to 1925 and at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad from 1925 to 1927. As a member of the group Masters of Analytical Art he worked at P. N. Filonov’s studio from 1926 to 1930. Kibrik became an instructor at the V. I. Surikov Moscow State Arts Institute in 1953, receiving a professorship there in 1954.

Kibrik’s illustrations and drawings are distinguished by the historical cogency and psychological depth of the figures. He illustrated Tynianov’s Second Lieutenant Kizhe (black water-color, 1930, Tret’iakov Gallery), Rolland’s Colas Breugnon (black and colored autolithography, 1934–36), de Coster’s La Légende de Thyl Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak (black and colored autolithography, 1937–38), Gogol’s Taras Bulba (black and colored autolithography, 1943–45), and Pushkin’s Boris Godunov (ink, 1959–64, Tret’iakov Gallery). Kibrik’s drawings include the series Lenin in 1917 (charcoal, 1946–47, V. I. Lenin Central Museum, Moscow), Meeting V. I. Lenin at Finland Station (lead suspension and charcoal, 1946–59, Tret’iakov Gallery), V. I. Lenin at a Subbotnik (lead suspension and charcoal, 1953–59, Tret’iakov Gallery), and the series 1917 (oils and tempera, 1967–71).

Kibrik received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948. He has also been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals.
