Established: Authorized as Kill Devil Hill Monument National Memorial on March 2, 1927; transferred from War Department on August 10, 1933; redesignated on December 1, 1953. Location: On the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the town of Kill Devil Hills, midway between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head at milepost 7.5 on US158. Facilities: Rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required. Activities: Guided tour. Special Features: The first sustained flight in a heavier-than-air machine was made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903. Site includes museum exhibits, reconstructed camp buildings, the first flight area, and a 60-foot granite monument perched atop 90-foot-tall Kill Devil Hill commemorating the achievement of these two visionaries from Dayton, Ohio.
