Kimberlite is a mica peridotite, an ultrabasic rock type with a complex and often highly altered mineral composition. It occurs in the Kimberley district of South Africa and the Kimberley and Lake Argyle regions of Australia, as well as near Ithaca, N.Y. kimberlite [′kimĀ·bər‚līt] (petrology) A form of mica periodite that is formed mainly of phenocrysts, olivine, phlogopite, and subordinate melilite with minor amounts of pyroxene, apatite, perovskite, and opaque oxides. Brad Wood, the superintendent of technical services for De Beers Canada, says 16 other diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes have been discovered on their Victor Project property and the company is starting a winter program of core drilling to evaluate the individual size, shape and make-up. If the results of the magnetic survey indicate that kimberlite pipes may be present, KRXR will then take the necessary steps to prepare for mining development of the site. Eight kimberlite pipes have been discovered since 1995, six of which have proven to be diamondiferous. |
