In southeastern TX panhandle, east of Lubbock; established Aug 21, 1876 from Fannin County. Name Origin: For William King (1812-26), a soldier killed at the Alamo.

In west-central WA, bounded on west by Puget Sound; organized Dec 22, 1852 (prior to statehood) from Thurston County. Name Origin: For William Rufus King (1786-1853), U.S. senator from AL (1819-44; 1848-52) and vice president for six weeks before his death. In 1986 it was decided the name would honor Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-68), slain civil rights leader.
