On the southwestern end of Long Island, east of Manhattan Island; original county, organized Nov 1, 1683. The county is coterminous with the borough of Brooklyn, part of New York City. Name Origin: For Charles II (1630-85), king of England.

In central CA, S of Fresno; organized Mar 22, 1893 from Tulare County. Name Origin: For the Kings River, which flows through the county, itself from Spanish Rio de los Santos Reyes 'River of the Holy Kings,' for the Biblical figures known in English as the Three Wise Men or Magi; river discovered on Jan 6, 1806, their feast day.
