Kiphuth, Robert (John Herman) (1890–1967) physical educator; born in Tonawanda, N.Y. Perhaps the greatest swimming coach in history, Kiphuth retired after 41 years at Yale with a 528–12 dual meet record and 38 eastern intercollegiate and 14 national championships. He also coached American Olympic swimming teams (1928–48). He was awarded the Medal of Freedom (1963). How to thank TFD for its existence?
