Kir (kûr), in the Bible.

1 Unidentified land to which Tiglath-pileser III banished the Syrians, credited by Amos as the original home of the Aramaeans.

2 Place in Moab, identified with Kir-haraseth, Kir-hareseth, Kir-haresh, and Kir-heres.

Kir

a rock that is a mixture of hardened petroleum or asphalt and arenaceous or argillaceous material.

Kir is found as sinters where oil-bearing beds are exposed to the surface; it therefore serves as a useful sign in prospecting for petroleum deposits.
