Kirkpatrick, Paul H. (Harmon) (1894– ) physicist; born in Wessington, S.D. He taught physics in Hangchow, China (1916–18), served in World War I, then became a professor at the University of Hawaii (1923–31). He joined Stanford (1931–60), where he developed X-ray optical instruments, invented the X-ray microscope, and was a pioneer in holography.
