Kiselev, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich
Born June 6 (18), 1838, in Sveaborg, present-day Suomenlinna, Finland; died Jan. 20 (Feb. 2), 1911, in St. Petersburg. Russian landscape painter. From 1861 to 1865, Kiselev studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He became a member of the academy in 1893 and a professor and director of its landscape studio in 1897. Kiselev joined the Society of Wandering Art Exhibitions (the peredvizhniki—a progressive art movement) in 1876. His landscapes are marked by a narrative quality and a fastidious attention to details (From the Hills, 1866; The Old Surami Pass, 1891 —both in the Tret’iakov Gallery). Kiselev was also an art critic. REFERENCESAkademik zhivopisi A. A. Kiselev. Moscow [1913].Mal’tseva, F. S. Mastera russkogo realisticheskogo peizazha, fasc. 2. Moscow, 1959. Pages 142–45.
