Kissi

a people of West Africa, inhabiting chiefly the coastal regions and area around Freetown in Sierra Leone and the region northwest of Conakry in the Republic of Guinea; a small number live in Liberia, near its border with Sierra Leone. The Kissi, together with the closely related Bulom, Temne, Limba, Baga, and Landuma peoples, number about 2,000,000 (1970, estimate). The Kissi language belongs to the West Atlantic group of languages. Most Kissi worship the forces of nature, although some are Muslims. The principal occupation is agriculture (peanuts, millet, and yams), and fishing is important along the coast. Many Kissi are seasonal workers in transportation and industries in Freetown, Bo, and other cities of Sierra Leone.
