Kitaigorodskii, Isaak Il’ich 

Born Apr. 15 (27), 1888, in Kremenchug; died June 26, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet specialist in the physical chemistry and technology of glass. Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1959).

Kitaigorodskii graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1910. From 1933 to 1965 he was a professor at the D. I. Mendeleev Moscow Chemical Engineering Institute. His principal works were devoted to glass-making techniques and the development of methods for the manufacture of glass, foam glass, and superstrong ceramic. Kitaigorodskii created a new class of crystallized glass—pyrocemics. He wrote a well-known textbook on glass technology, which has been translated into German, Hungarian, and Czech. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1941, 1950) and the Lenin Prize (1963), he was awarded four orders and several medals.
