Organized as Slaughter County Jan 16, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Jefferson and King counties; name changed Jul 13, 1857. Name Origin: For an Indian chief, whose name means 'brave,' said to have saved area settlers by warning them of a planned massacre. Originally named for Lt. W.A. Slaughter (?-1855). Area (sq mi): 565.98 (land 395.97; water 170.01). Pop per sq mi: 607.80. Pop 2005: 240,661. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.70%; 1990-2000 22.30%. Pop 2000: 231,969 (White 82.20%; Black or African American 2.90%; Hispanic or Latino 4.10%; Asian 4.40%; Other 8.40%). Foreign born: 5.70%. Median age: 35.80. Income 2000: per capita $22,317; median household $46,840; Pop below poverty level: 8.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $29,493-$32,140. Unemployment 2004: 5.90%. Change from 2000: -0.10%.
