Kittel, Charles (1916– ) physicist; born in New York City. He was a physicist with the U.S. Navy (1940–45), then performed research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1945–46) and Bell Telephone Laboratories (1947–50), before becoming a professor at the University of California: Berkeley (1950–79). A leader in the application of microwave resonance methods to investigations of solid state ferromagnetism, Kittel was also honored for his improvements in the college physics curriculum.
