In central WA, southeast of Tacoma; organized Nov 2, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Yakima County. Name Origin: Probably from a subtribal name of the Yakima Indians. Meaning uncertain, with 'shoal people' most appropriate, but 'land of bread' has also been suggested, as has 'gray gravel bank,' said to refer to a gravel bank on a river shoal.

Area (sq mi): 2333.11 (land 2297.19; water 35.93). Pop per sq mi: 16.00.
Pop 2005: 36,841. State rank: 25. Pop change: 2000-20005 10.40%; 1990-2000 24.80%. Pop 2000: 33,362 (White 89.40%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 5.00%; Asian 2.20%; Other 5.30%). Foreign born: 5.30%. Median age: 31.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,928; median household $32,546; Pop below poverty level: 19.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,028-$24,048.
Unemployment 2004: 6.50%. Change from 2000: 0.00%. Median travel time to work: 22.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 16.10%.
