Klingenthal
a city in the German Democratic Republic, in the district of Karl-Marx-Stadt, in the Erzgebirge Mountains, Vogtland. Population, 14,200 (1970). In the 17th century, Klingenthal and its environs were important as part of a mining region. Since the 18th century the city has been famous for its musical instruments (harmonicas, accordions, and violins). It also has industry in nonferrous metallurgy, textiles, and woodworking. Klingenthal has a research institute of sound and acoustics, a professional school training specialists who make musical instruments, and a musical instruments museum.
