Kluge, Friedrich 

Born June 22, 1856, in Cologne; died May 21, 1926, in Freiburg. German philologist and linguist.

Kluge was a representative of the Leipzig school of neogrammarians. He wrote on the comparative grammar of the Germanic languages, the history of German and English, the Gothic language, and German word formation, lexicology, and lexicography. His Etymological Dictionary of the German Language (1883) is an important contribution to Germanic studies. Kluge published the German lexicological journal Zeitschrift für deutsche Wortforschung between 1900 and 1914.
